Rising majestically to an impressive 5,109 meters, the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains make for a truly awe-inspiring sight. Located in western Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park is home to some of the most beautiful alpine scenery in the world, with its jagged peaks, glaciers, waterfalls, and lakes. The park’s diverse habitats support a wide range of flora and fauna, including several endemic species such as the Rwenzori turaco, the Rwenzori double-collared sunbird, and the Rwenzori leopard.

The park offers a range of hiking and mountaineering options, from day hikes to multi-day expeditions, catering to all levels of fitness and experience. The most popular hiking trail is the Central Circuit, which takes about seven days to complete and offers stunning views of the mountains and the surrounding landscapes. The Margherita Peak, the highest point in the Rwenzori Mountains, can only be reached through a challenging trek that takes approximately 9 to 12 days, but the reward is an unforgettable experience of standing on the roof of Africa.

Aside from the hiking and mountaineering, visitors to the park can also enjoy bird watching, cultural tours, and nature walks. The park’s rich cultural heritage is showcased through the Bakonzo people who live on the foothills of the mountains. The Bakonzo are skilled craftsmen and women, famous for their intricate woodcarvings and basket weaving. A visit to the Bakonzo community offers an opportunity to learn about their customs, traditions, and way of life.
